“Mock La Serena: the galaxy-halo connection and its relationship to the environment”

October 16th to 19th

Description:

The Workshop titled "Mock La Serena: the Galaxy-Halo Connection and Its Relationship to the Environment" represents the sixth iteration of this event, featuring the participation of national and international researchers engaged in the field of galaxy formation and evolution, as well as cosmology. The goal of Mock La Serena is to bring together leading researchers in computational studies of galaxy formation and cosmology and key representatives from current and future surveys to promote discussions and collaborations. The main focus of Mock La Serena will be on the galaxy-halo connection. This event serves as a continuation of similar workshops held in various regions across the globe:

  • Mock Santiago, Chile, 2016
  • Mock Perth, Australia, 2017
  • Mock Durham, United Kingdom, 2018
  • Mock Cordoba, Argentina, 2019
  • Mock Innsbruck, Austria, 2020

The Workshop will convene leading researchers, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as emerging researchers contributing significantly to both theoretical-computational and observational aspects of the field, with a particular emphasis on forthcoming surveys. The primary objective is to stimulate discussions and foster new national and international collaboration networks. Additionally, this Workshop will provide an opportunity for postgraduate students and senior undergraduate students to interact with and learn from leading scientists on a global scale.

Accommodation
La Serena counts  with a vast array of different options for accommodation. You can either choose a hotel or an apartment offered via AirBnB. Most hotels are located at the coast. If you decide to book something in that area, you will have to use services such as Uber or Taxis to get to the venue. Additionally, several visitors in the past have opted for a room at the Hotel Terra Diaguita, which is located within the historical city center. You can find the address in the following map:

Travel information

By air: The recommended way to reach La Serena from Santiago is by air. Several flights are scheduled daily back and forth. Keep in mind that La Serena is commonly foggy in the mornings. This may cause delays on the earliest flights.

By bus: Once in Santiago (or any other City within Chile), it is possible to reach La Serena by long distance bus

  • The easiest way to do this is to buy a ticket using “Turbus” (https://new.turbus.cl/turbuscl/). Turbus has a connection between the airport and its bus terminal. This connection costs 2200 pesos (the bus is white). It can be boarded on the first level, in front of gate 4. We know you can pay in cash, but we are not not sure if card payments are accepted.
  • Another option is to purchase the ticket from Santiago to La Serena through the website “recorrido.cl”. These buses depart from the San Borja terminal, so you'll need to take the Centropuerto bus. These (blue_ buses are also boarded on the first level, in front of gates 4-5. The price is the same as Turbus, but this one can be paid online (https://www.centropuerto.cl/). Then, get off at the Estacion Central stop and walk from Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue to the terminal (from the yellow avenue to the red point).
